Healing in Vaultbreakers is not one interchangeable pool. Public test notes distinguish current health from wounds, and the July rework states that wounds no longer recover passively. A player can therefore survive an exchange, use ordinary recovery, and still enter the next fight with a dangerous limit on effective health. The safe response is to identify which layer is damaged before consuming an item.
Read the health bar before using anything
Pause in cover and inspect the bar, status effects, and item description. Missing current health may be restored by one category of recovery; a wound can require an effect that explicitly restores wounds or the lost ceiling. Do not repeatedly consume food because the visible bar refuses to fill past a limit. That spends supplies without treating the cause.
The red low-health effect described in July notes is an urgency signal, not a diagnosis by itself. Move out of active lines, account for nearby enemies, and create enough time for the full recovery animation. Healing while a Rusthook Sniper or another ranged opponent still has sight can turn a manageable state into a downed player.
Give food, bandages, and potions separate jobs
July notes explicitly call out food, bandages, and potions in the healing rework. Treat their current in-game tooltips as the authority for amount, duration, wound interaction, and use time. A plentiful food item may be appropriate between small encounters; a bandage may solve a different recovery state; a potion may be the fast answer you reserve for a dangerous transition. The exact values can change between Demo, Alpha, and later builds.
Carry enough variety to solve likely problems without filling the backpack with redundant supplies. Test one item safely in Haven or early in a low-risk run when possible. Record whether movement is allowed during use, whether damage interrupts it, and what portion of the bar changes.
Respect the shared potion cooldown
October notes changed potions to provide immediate effects and share a 90-second cooldown. Specialized types mentioned there include Blightfire and Lycanthrope potions, along with shield potions. The practical consequence is that using one potion can close access to another effect during the next fight, even when both remain in the inventory.
Choose the potion for the threat you are actually facing. Do not use a small general effect reflexively if a known hazard is seconds away. In a party, call the cooldown so teammates do not assume you can cover the next phase. Values and named effects remain build-specific, but the decision to check the shared timer is stable.
Use hero recovery deliberately
Some October hero changes attach wound recovery to abilities or passives. Thora’s Zealous Onslaught and Earthquake are examples mentioned in the patch notes. That does not make a hero an unlimited substitute for supplies: the effect can depend on cooldown, position, missing health, or the current balance implementation.
If a build uses hero-based wound recovery, trigger it while it also advances the fight safely. Avoid spending a key defensive action only to repair a small wound just before a more dangerous wave. Read the current skill description, compare the before-and-after bar, and coordinate with the party’s consumables.
Set a retreat threshold before danger
Decide in Haven what will make you abandon an optional objective: no wound treatment, one remaining general heal, a critical party member wounded, or a dangerous shared cooldown. A threshold chosen calmly is easier to follow than a debate after another enemy pack appears.
When the threshold is reached, stop looting and move toward a known extraction route. Use cover, clear only the enemies that block movement, and do not split the group to search for one more supply cache. The Extraction guide helps turn that decision into an orderly exit.
Recover between encounters, not inside the next one
After combat, first confirm that the area is quiet. Then check health, wounds, potion cooldown, party state, and remaining supplies. Repair the worst condition before opening containers or moving through a one-way route. If treatment is scarce, give it to the player whose role or carried objective is most important for the return.
At Haven, restock based on what was actually consumed. If wounds caused the problem, adding more ordinary food will not fix the loadout. If healing animations were repeatedly interrupted, the answer may be better positioning and earlier disengagement rather than a larger stack.
Diagnose repeated healing failures
When an item appears not to work, capture the item name, build, hero, active effects, health state, and result. Check whether the maximum was wounded, a cooldown was active, the use was interrupted, or the effect was immediate and smaller than expected. These details distinguish a misunderstood rule from a reproducible bug.
Avoid relying on old screenshots for numeric comparisons. Healing has already been reworked during testing, and later patches can alter duration, amount, or shared timing. The current client text and an observed controlled use are the best combination available before release.
