Vaultbreakers Beginner Guide

Learn a safe first-session route for Vaultbreakers, from Haven preparation and combat fundamentals to extraction and lasting progression.

Vaultbreakers is an extraction action RPG where a successful run is not simply the run with the most fights. You prepare in Haven, enter a dangerous region, complete useful objectives, and decide when the items you carry are worth taking home. The public Demo provides a practical introduction through Nymera or Bjornir, part of Wolfswood, and the first Vaultbreak. It supports solo play or a party of up to three people. Because the full base game is still listed as “To be announced,” this guide separates playable Demo rules from systems described for later tests.

Make Haven your first checkpoint

Do not hurry past Haven just because it is safe. Check your hero, equipped weapon, armor, consumables, and active tasks before entering an expedition. Empty space has value: a backpack filled with replaceable supplies leaves less room for a meaningful recipe, material, or piece of gear. Put items you do not need into storage, repair anything you intend to rely on, and bring a healing option you understand.

The Demo is designed to carry Legacy progression into the full release. Ordinary test progress, inventories, and balance values should not be treated as a permanent launch save unless the developers say so. Legacy Points are the durable goal to watch; the Legacy Points guide explains that boundary without promising that every item will survive a reset.

Before departure

Store valuables, check equipment condition, select a clear task, and leave enough backpack room for discoveries.

During the run

Keep a mental return route, spend healing deliberately, and compare optional rewards with the risk of carrying them farther.

At the portal

Make the extraction decision with the whole party. A modest secured haul is better than a perfect loadout lost to one needless encounter.

Read combat before chasing damage

Start with short attacks and enough stamina or movement freedom to escape the answer. Vaultbreakers enemies can pressure from different ranges, and later public test notes describe smarter Chosen of Maldrakor that react to activity. Move the camera before committing to a long sequence. If two threats overlap, reposition until they approach from a narrower angle instead of trying to trade through both.

Wounds matter separately from ordinary lost health. July test notes state that wounds no longer recover passively, so food, bandages, potions, and wound recovery are not interchangeable. Learn what an item restores before danger begins. A heal that raises current health may not repair the reduced ceiling left by a wound. See Healing and Wounds for a more focused recovery plan.

Against an unfamiliar enemy, spend one exchange observing its startup, reach, follow-up, and recovery. The goal is to identify when you can safely interrupt, dodge, use cover, or disengage. A clean short punish teaches more than a long combo that works only because the enemy happened to miss.

Give each expedition one main purpose

Choose a primary objective before leaving Haven: advance a quest, gather a particular material, learn a route, test a weapon, or reach a Vault. You can still take opportunities, but the main purpose tells you when the run has already succeeded. This prevents the common extraction-game mistake of carrying a valuable result into another fight solely because the map is not empty.

Use landmarks rather than trying to memorize every turn at once. Note the route from your entry to a building cluster, encounter site, Vault approach, and known extraction area. Official test notes describe evolving Wolfswood locations, including Pinecrest Farm, the Bandit Enclave, South Vault Crash, electrical floors, darkness, and one-way portals. A route may therefore change between builds; learn relationships and danger signals, not a rigid community map screenshot.

Treat loot as a decision, not a score

Inspect gear in terms of the problem it solves. A higher-looking number is not automatically worth abandoning a coherent weapon role, defensive need, or hero interaction. The game has used crafted, fixed, named, and ability-granting items across public tests, while recipes and economy values have continued to change. Take a new item home before spending heavily if you do not yet understand its repair, salvage, or crafting relationship.

Consumables also impose an opportunity cost. October notes introduced immediate potion effects and a shared potion cooldown, including specialized Blightfire, Lycanthrope, and shield options. That means stacking many potion types does not guarantee simultaneous emergency answers. Put the effect you can recognize under pressure in an accessible slot and know what remains unavailable after it is used.

Extract while the choice is still yours

An extraction portal is a strategic exit, not an admission of failure. Before approaching, heal enough to survive contact, reload your understanding of nearby threats, and ensure party members are ready. Portal presentation and map markers have changed during testing, so follow the current build’s icon, text, sound, and objective guidance rather than an old timer claim.

For a group, say what you are carrying and whether the main objective is complete. Do not start a distant optional fight while another player is committing to leave. If one member is wounded or holding the run’s key reward, the group should value that information above a generic desire to clear one more area. The Extraction guide covers approach and team timing in detail.

Build a useful loop after defeat

When a run ends badly, identify one cause you can change: poor route knowledge, a wound ignored too long, an unread enemy cue, an overfilled backpack, or a late extraction decision. Adjust only a few variables on the next attempt. Switching hero, weapon, artifacts, route, and objective together hides what improved.

End a successful session by storing gains, checking newly available recipes or Codex choices, repairing the loadout you want to repeat, and writing down one unresolved location. That turns the next expedition into a continuation instead of another blind start. For the public Demo’s specific limits and transfer rules, use the Demo guide.
