Vaultbreakers is still unreleased as a base game, while a separate free Demo is live and an Alpha PvPvE test is scheduled. This timeline separates a product launch, test schedule, patch note, known issue, and future plan so that an announcement is not mistaken for a released feature. The latest official update found on October 10, 2026 is the October 8 Demo and Alpha patch post.
Current product status
Base game
AppID: 306910.
Status: unreleased, Steam date “To be announced.” BetaDwarf discusses a 2027 aim, not a fixed launch date.
Public Demo
AppID: 4488770.
Status: released October 8, 2026. PvE-only, two heroes, part of Wolfswood, Haven, quests through the first Vaultbreak, and up to three-player co-op.
October Alpha
Window: October 15–21, 2026.
Status: announced PvPvE test. The exact delivery client must be confirmed when access opens.
Historical Playtest
AppID: 1851490 relation.
Status: useful only for explicitly dated public tests; do not assume it delivers the Alpha.
How to read this timeline
A release changes product availability. A test announcement gives a window or access plan. Patch notes describe changes intended for a named public client, but a line can cover the Demo and Alpha together while certain items are Alpha-only. A known issue describes a problem the developer recognizes; it is not proof of a universal workaround.
Check three labels before acting: product or AppID, publication date, and whether the feature is already playable. If a patch mentions Vaults 3 and 4 “in the Alpha Test,” do not search for them in the Demo. If an older Playtest post lists a timer or item value, do not transfer it to October without a current check.
Vaultbreakers does not expose a public semantic version in the official surfaces reviewed here. A date or Steam BuildID should not be rewritten as a game version.
Official timeline
2026-10-08 - Demo and Alpha patch notes
Type: Patch notes
The October post documents changes for the live Demo and announced Alpha, with Alpha-only sections labeled inside the post. It expands world content, Vaults, Artifacts, enemies, Codex content, quests, crafting, Challenges, hero balance, UI, controller behavior, performance work, and known issues.
- Sparkwing, Lumiri, and Thora are explicitly not in the Demo.
- Alpha-only additions include later locations, Vaults 3 and 4, Necronus, and the updated Wreckytitan.
- Changelings are renamed Chosen of Maldrakor.
- The post says DirectX 11 is no longer supported because of instability and crashes.

2026-10-08 - Public Demo launch and Alpha schedule
Type: Announcement
BetaDwarf announced that the free Demo was live on Steam and identified Nymera and Bjornir as its two playable Vaultbreakers. The post describes part of Wolfswood, an upgradable Haven, quests through the first Vaultbreak, co-op with up to two friends, and Legacy Points.
- The Alpha is scheduled for October 15 at 10:00 CEST through October 21 at 23:59 CEST.
- Demo progress is announced to carry into this Alpha.
- BetaDwarf remains the developer, while Square Enix Collective joins as publisher.

2026-07-22 - Technical PvE Playtest
Type: Public test patch
The July test was described as a limited technical test for the upcoming Demo. It introduced Adventure and Core choices while showing Breaker as unavailable, added many items and recipes, expanded Wolfswood and Haven, revised healing, storage, crafting, social features, controller support, portals, quests, and performance.
- Recipes for named and fixed items could come from enemies and chests in that test.
- Item markers were added for quests, recipes, buildings, and upgrades.
- Haven received a larger map and clearer building markers.
- Mission duration, portal counts, hostility colors, and numeric balance values remain dated July facts.

2026-02-10 - Codex and Ability Item Playtest update
Type: Public test patch
The February post introduced a stronger Codex description, connected Challenges with Legacy and Marks, expanded Ability Items, revised hero abilities, changed quests and Haven systems, and listed matchmaking, progression, UI, crafting, and performance fixes.
- The post describes claimed Codex rewards, Legacy, and Marks as persisting between tests and after launch.
- It names abilities, perks, skins or Chromas, emotes, and Marks as Codex reward groups at that time.
- Reward inventory, costs, hero values, and known issues must be checked against the current Demo.

2025-12-04 - December public Playtest
Type: Public test milestone
The December test is useful history for onboarding, trio play, Vaultbreaking, quests, and the older Changeling terminology. It is not a current Demo balance source. Any route, value, or enemy behavior from that episode needs a newer check.
- Keep the December window and client separate from Demo AppID 4488770.
- Use the October name Chosen of Maldrakor when describing the current enemy group.
- Preserve the older name only when explaining dated patch history.

Changes to verify when the Alpha opens
First confirm the official delivery client and access flow. Do not assume historical Playtest AppID 1851490. Then verify Sparkwing, Lumiri, and Thora availability; Breaker PvPvE queues; party and Haven behavior; region and server choices; Demo carryover; later Journeys; Vaults 3 and 4; named bosses; and any Alpha-only questline.
Record live values only with client, date, region, difficulty, party size, and relevant item or hero. The October patch is strong evidence for intended changes, but it cannot replace opening-day observation of access, server behavior, or features explicitly labeled Alpha.
Current known-issue boundaries
October notes identify issues involving localized text, infinite loading in some quests, crashes or instability, UI and controller behavior, parties, and other test surfaces. Known issues can be fixed server-side or by a later client update. Check the official patch index before applying an old workaround.
Do not recommend unofficial binaries, access-key sharing, leaked builds, or undocumented renderer forcing. For a reproducible problem, preserve error text, product, client, Windows and hardware details, region, party state, and time, then use the in-game report or official support path.
Release and roadmap boundaries
Steam still says “To be announced” for the base game. BetaDwarf’s site discusses a 2027 aim, which is not a confirmed day or month. No final price, edition list, console product list, crossplay policy, or cross-save policy is established by the current Steam pages.
The base page advertises PvE and PvPvE with shared progression, while the Demo is PvE-only. Treat the Alpha as a test of the competitive side, not the full release. Future announcements can change the schedule, product metadata, or carryover rules.
