Vaultbreakers calls its playable characters Vaultbreakers. The live Demo includes Nymera and Bjornir. Sparkwing, Lumiri, and Thora are explicitly marked as unavailable in the Demo by the October patch notes and are intended for the announced Alpha. Start with the two characters the current client actually exposes, then recheck the selection screen when the Alpha opens rather than treating five announced names as five Demo choices.

Roster boundary, checked October 10, 2026: Nymera and Bjornir are playable in Demo AppID 4488770. Sparkwing, Lumiri, and Thora have current official balance notes but are labeled “Not in the Demo.” Their Alpha availability, starting unlock state, and live values need confirmation in the Alpha client.

Choose a Demo hero by the problem you want to solve

Pick Nymera when you want to learn encounters while creating space and watching from range. Her named tools suggest a kit where movement, projectile timing, and Spiritbloom pickups matter. That does not make every fight safe: a ranged hero can still be trapped by terrain, extra enemies, or a poorly timed channel. Use the first missions to learn how far Moth Dash moves, which direction it accepts, when Emerald Barrage leaves you committed, and whether a Spiritbloom pickup is safe to collect.

Pick Bjornir when you want to learn closer-range pressure and health-linked defensive decisions. Official notes connect his kit to Chill, Ice Armor, Wild Swing, Giant Snowball, max health, and taunting. Read each current tooltip before building around an older percentage. A durable character still needs a retreat route, wound recovery, repaired gear, and enough attention left for environmental hazards.

Do not choose only from a community tier list. During public tests, a balance pass can change scaling, cooldowns, perk behavior, or item thresholds without changing the character’s basic identity. A useful first comparison is practical: which hero lets you understand the objective, survive the route, and recover from one mistake with equipment you can currently replace?

Read abilities, perks, and items as separate layers

A hero’s base abilities are only one part of a run. Perks can change how an ability behaves, while weapons, armor, Ability Items, Artifacts, potions, and Haven bonuses can add different jobs to the loadout. Before calling an effect part of a hero’s permanent kit, check where the description appears. A perk choice is not the same as a starting ability, and an item-granted action may disappear when the item is replaced.

On the character or perk screen, note the exact name, input, resource, cooldown, targeting rule, and unlock condition shown by the current client. Then test one change at a time. If a new perk changes Emerald Barrage, use the same reachable enemy and difficulty before and after selecting it. If a piece of gear changes a threshold, separate the item’s effect from the hero’s own scaling.

The February notes say all perks for a selected Vaultbreaker became visible with unlock information. That makes the screen a planning tool, not proof that every perk is already unlocked. The October notes also change multiple hero thresholds and scaling rules. When an old guide disagrees with the live tooltip, use the live client for the run and record the product and date of the discrepancy.

Demo and Alpha availability

The Demo provides the most reliable place to learn Nymera and Bjornir because it is public, current, and tied to AppID 4488770. It is PvE-only and reaches the first Vaultbreak. Use that boundary when evaluating a hero: Demo encounters can teach controls, recovery, positioning, and basic synergy, but they cannot prove how the same kit handles Alpha PvPvE pressure or later Journey content.

The official October notes contain changes for Sparkwing, Lumiri, and Thora while clearly saying they are not in the Demo. That means the notes are useful preparation, not permission to publish a complete live build. Wait for the Alpha character-selection screen to confirm whether each hero is immediately available, gated by an unlock, temporarily disabled, or changed again.

Demo progress is announced to carry into this specific October Alpha, but ordinary Demo progress does not carry to full release. Keep that rule separate from hero ownership and Codex rewards. A character selection, temporary item, or test loadout should not be described as permanent unless the current interface or a first-party announcement says so.

Build a party without inventing fixed roles

Vaultbreakers supports solo play and co-op with up to two friends in the Demo. In a party, cover actions rather than forcing MMO labels onto every hero. Decide who can safely begin an encounter, who can interrupt or control space with the current loadout, who carries emergency recovery, and who calls the retreat. Those jobs can move between players as perks and items change.

Before entering Wolfswood, compare movement options and long commitments. If one player must channel or hold an action, the others should avoid dragging a new group into that space. If a hero relies on pickups or close proximity, agree who will keep the route clear. When someone changes a perk or Ability Item, explain what party job changed instead of assuming the old plan still works.

For Alpha PvPvE, add communication about rival players, noise, and extraction. Do not carry July hostility colors or timers forward as guaranteed October rules. The Alpha interface, queue description, and opening-day notes should decide how the party identifies threats.

Patch-sensitive details to recheck

Nymera’s Moth Dash, Emerald Barrage, Soaring Strike, and several perks changed between July and October notes. Bjornir received fixes and value changes to Giant Snowball, Wild Swing, Ice Armor, and Ice Block. Sparkwing, Lumiri, and Thora also received current notes despite not being in the Demo. These changes show why a hero page should name the test and date for any number.

Recheck a value when it affects a decision: whether a threshold is reachable, whether a cooldown fits a boss opening, whether a defensive effect survives a hit, or whether a perk changes damage type. Exact rankings need the current client, comparable equipment, the same difficulty, and repeated encounters. A patch-note number alone does not establish a best build.

Common roster mistakes

  • Installing an old Playtest client and expecting the Demo roster: launch “Vaultbreakers Demo” from AppID 4488770.
  • Looking for Sparkwing, Lumiri, or Thora in the Demo: they are explicitly outside that client as of the October notes.
  • Treating a perk or Ability Item as a base ability: check which screen supplies the effect.
  • Copying a July value into October: later notes can replace scaling, thresholds, cooldowns, or availability.
  • Calling one hero mandatory for co-op: party jobs depend on current perks, items, difficulty, objective, and player comfort.
  • Publishing an Alpha build before the client opens: confirm access, unlocks, controls, and live tooltips first.
