Vaultbreakers Bjornir Guide

Learn Bjornir’s confirmed Demo availability, read his October ability changes, and use his close-range control without relying on a stale build.

Bjornir is one of the two heroes available in the public Vaultbreakers Demo, alongside Nymera. He can therefore be learned in the current PvE slice rather than only through patch descriptions. The October notes reference Giant Snowball, Wild Swing, Ice Armor, and Ice Block, giving him a clear identity around close pressure, disruption, and defensive timing. Exact values and perk choices remain tied to the live build, so the goal here is a repeatable way to understand his kit.

Start by separating entry from survival

Bjornir may look suited to standing in the center of every pack, but durability does not remove the need for a route out. Before entering, mark the ranged threat, the corner or cover you can retreat behind, and the enemy whose attack can interrupt you. Use a short action first. Commit to a larger swing only when the group is facing you and the party understands the opening.

Watch what Ice Armor and Ice Block do in the current Demo rather than assuming their names make Bjornir invulnerable. Record activation time, duration, movement limits, and what happens against wounds or repeated hits. Defensive abilities are most valuable when they preserve a planned position or absorb a known danger, not when used after every other option has already failed.

Giant Snowball

Check its current travel, control, and setup value. Use it to create a readable engagement rather than firing through unseen terrain.

Wild Swing

Confirm the commitment and recovery before using it inside a mixed pack. A wide action still needs a safe ending.

Ice Armor

Treat the live tooltip and damage response as authoritative. Pair defense with a reason to hold ground.

Ice Block

Test which threats it answers and what Bjornir can do immediately afterward; timing matters more than the visual shell.

Turn control into a team window

A control effect matters when the party can act on it. Say which target you are engaging and whether the result is meant to interrupt, group, or protect. Nymera or another teammate can then use the opening without spending a second control at the same time. If the enemy is already harmless, save Bjornir’s next answer for the flank.

Do not drag a controlled target away from the party’s attacks unless relocation is the purpose. Fight where the camera can see additional enemies and where a retreat does not cross a hazard. In co-op, the player with the clearest view should call new threats while Bjornir is occupied at close range.

Use defense before the crisis peaks

Defensive timing should prevent a predictable sequence, not merely delay defeat at critical health. If an enemy telegraphs a heavy attack or reinforcements are arriving, an armor or block effect can buy the party time to reposition. If Bjornir is already wounded, surrounded, and out of recovery supplies, even a successful defense may leave no productive next move.

Plan what comes after protection ends: a short punish, movement to cover, a potion after its shared cooldown, or an extraction retreat. Test whether a defensive state locks actions or changes enemy targeting in the current build. Those observations are more useful than copying an old numerical build.

Choose gear for an observable weakness

Equip a weapon and armor combination that fixes a problem you have actually experienced. If Bjornir reaches enemies safely but cannot exit a long animation, prioritize a quicker response rather than more theoretical burst. If ranged enemies repeatedly split the approach, bring a tool that helps interrupt or reposition. Ability Items and Artifacts should complete that job instead of duplicating the same moment.

Keep one ordinary expedition loadout long enough to compare results. Change one major piece at a time, then repeat a similar encounter and difficulty. Public tests have revised Named, Fixed, Fateweaver, and ability-granting gear, so item category or rarity alone cannot establish a permanent best choice.

Manage wounds and potion timing

Close-range play makes recovery planning especially important. July notes state that wounds do not recover passively, and October notes use a shared potion cooldown. Check the health ceiling after taking a heavy sequence. An ordinary heal may not solve a wound, while an early potion may lock out a specialized effect for the next engagement.

Carry an appropriate treatment and set a party retreat threshold. If Bjornir is the player creating space for others, losing his reliable recovery can change the entire group’s risk. The Healing and Wounds guide explains how to distinguish the damaged layers before spending an item.

Practice a simple Bjornir loop

In a low-risk Demo encounter, approach without using a major ability. Observe one enemy sequence, reposition, then test a single control action. Follow with the shortest safe attack and leave before the enemy answer. On the next attempt, add the defensive effect at a known cue. This reveals what each part contributes without hiding it inside a full rotation.

Review three facts afterward: which enemy was displaced or interrupted, how much recovery time Bjornir exposed, and whether the team gained a better position. If the answer to the third question is no, the ability may have been impressive but poorly timed.

Keep Demo and Alpha notes separate

Bjornir is confirmed in the current Demo, but Alpha balance can change his values, perks, and surrounding item choices. Re-read the in-game descriptions after the Alpha client updates. Do not assume a Demo item will be acquired at the same point or perform identically in a wider Alpha region.

For another current Demo hero, compare Nymera. Their different movement and control decisions make the same Wolfswood encounter a useful test of playstyle rather than a tier ranking.
