The free Vaultbreakers Demo is a separate Steam product, AppID 4488770. Install that listing if you want to play now; AppID 306910 is the unreleased base game. The Demo is a PvE slice with Nymera and Bjornir, part of Wolfswood, an upgradable Haven, perks, onboarding and main quests through the first Vaultbreak, and solo or three-player co-op.
What is included
Heroes
Available: Nymera and Bjornir.
Not in the Demo: Sparkwing, Lumiri, and Thora are named in the October notes as outside this client.
World
Part of Wolfswood, an upgradable Haven, onboarding quests, and the main quest path through the first Vaultbreak.
Modes
PvE only. Play solo or in co-op with up to two friends. PvPvE belongs to the announced Alpha and the broader base-game plan.
Persistence
Legacy Points have the explicit long-term carryover promise. Treat items, ordinary quest progress, character growth, and Haven state as resettable unless the current client says otherwise.
Install the correct client
Open the Vaultbreakers Demo store page and choose the free Demo installation. In your Steam library, check that the product is labeled “Vaultbreakers Demo.” The base listing can be wishlisted but does not yet offer the full game. An older Vaultbreakers Playtest entry may remain in a library from a previous episode; do not use it as a substitute for the Demo.
The Demo requires Windows 10 64-bit, broadband internet, and 10 GB of available storage according to its current store page. Steam lists full Xbox-controller support and an unknown Steam Deck rating. The store still says DirectX 11 in its minimum block, while the October 8 patch notes say DX11 was removed because it caused crashes and instability. Treat the newer dated warning as an operational alert and see System Requirements before troubleshooting launch issues.
Plan your first run
Start in Haven by checking the mission flow, inventory labels, and the current difficulty descriptions. The Demo is deliberately limited, so follow the onboarding and main quests rather than trying to reach locations named for the Alpha. The published endpoint is the first Vaultbreak. If a community route leads toward later Journeys, Vaults 3 or 4, Bahra, Shanty Town, Windshear Crag, or the Fume Pits, it is describing Alpha scope or an older test.
In Wolfswood, use the map and quest markers but still read the local situation. Vaultbreakers rewards deciding when to engage and when to avoid a fight. Keep enemies in view, listen for danger cues, and do not spend every consumable on an encounter you can bypass. When your inventory fills, inspect the item’s marker and tooltip before salvaging it; materials can be needed for quests, recipes, buildings, or upgrades.
Before committing to the first Vaultbreak, repair or replace broken equipment, organize healing and utility items, and make sure your party agrees on the objective. The Demo proves the milestone exists but does not make every online strategy or loot claim stable. Use the current interface, not an old Playtest screenshot, for the final preparation check.
Solo and co-op expectations
Solo play is supported, and the Demo’s mode is PvE. Co-op supports you plus up to two friends. The official store establishes the party size but does not fully document invite ownership, shared quest credit, disconnect recovery, or loot allocation. Confirm those behaviors in the live client rather than promising that every objective advances identically for every party member.
When playing with friends, choose a party leader before entering a mission, confirm everyone can see the same selected objective, and avoid separating so far that one player triggers an encounter while the others are managing inventory. If someone disconnects, note whether Steam still shows them in the party and whether the mission offers a reconnect path. These observations can change with server updates.
What carries into Alpha and launch
The October 8 announcement says Demo progress carries into the Alpha Test scheduled for October 15 at 10:00 CEST through October 21 at 23:59 CEST. That is a dated test-to-test promise. It does not mean the same progress survives every later Alpha, beta, or launch build.
For full release, the Demo store gives a narrower rule: ordinary Demo progress will not carry, may reset before launch, and Legacy Points carry after launch. Keep Legacy Points conceptually separate from character level, current inventory, quest completion, recipes, Haven upgrades, and other test state. If a reward screen specifically identifies a persistent unlock, record its wording; otherwise assume the ordinary Demo reset rule applies.
Problems you can resolve quickly
- No install button on AppID 306910: use the separate Demo listing, AppID 4488770.
- A guide shows five heroes: verify whether it is describing the Alpha; the Demo currently lists only Nymera and Bjornir.
- PvP does not appear: the Demo is explicitly PvE-only.
- A later map or boss is missing: check whether the source belongs to the Alpha or an older Playtest.
- A controller prompt differs: the Demo advertises full Xbox-controller support, but actual prompts and remapping still depend on the connected hardware and Steam Input state.
- Progress expectations are unclear: preserve the distinction between Demo-to-Alpha carryover and the narrower full-release promise for Legacy Points.
